Kathy’s interest and expertise are in assisting family members, family executives, and legal and financial professionals in applying family systems theory to the challenges in their professional and personal lives. Her focus is on making available the groundbreaking research of Dr. Murray Bowen to the professionals who serve business families and organizations. She works with motivated leaders to think systems and increase their capacity to manage themselves in times of change. 

Kathy holds a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from George Washington University. She is a board member of the Woman’s Growth Capital Fund, Canada Alamosa Institute, and the Jewish Council for the Aging. She speaks and writes for a national audience. Kathy has also co-authored three books, Understanding Organizations,  The Emotional Side of Organizations, and Trustworthy:  New Angles on Trusts from Beneficiaries and Trustees. 

Kathy is a faculty member at The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family. She is a Co-Founder of Navigating Systems, a learning forum dedicated to improving one’s functioning through application of the principles that define Bowen Family Systems Theory. 

Kathy is also an adjunct faculty at the George Washington University School of Business, where she heads the Institute for Succession. She has served as a Dean of the Family Office Exchange Learning Academy, and as the President of the Family Firm Institute Education and Research Foundation.

THOMASINA H. WILLIAMS

Thomasina serves as a Strategic Thought Partner, Consultant and Executive Coach to enterprising families throughout the nation, helping them have conversations about sensitive subjects, resolve challenging conflicts and make difficult decisions, so that family members blossom, families flourish, and their businesses thrive. 

Thomasina was the first in-house consultant hired by Wells Fargo Private Bank to play a leadership role in developing its offering to help ultra-high net worth families navigate generational wealth transitions. She also has served as a consultant with a leading family enterprise consulting firm, published articles, presented to international audiences, and conducted trainings for professional advisors to families.  

Prior to her work with business-owning families, Thomasina practiced law for more than 20 years, rising in three years to become a partner in a major full-service law firm headquartered in Miami, FL. She went on to co-found the first Black-owned law firm in Miami with a primarily corporate clientele. The South Florida Legal Guide recognized Thomasina as one of the “Top 250 Lawyers in South Florida,” and the Miami-Dade County Commission acknowledged her extensive pro bono legal work on high-profile public interest cases by naming a day in her honor.   

She also worked in institutional philanthropy in New York City where she was a program officer with the second largest private foundation in the country and invested more than $42 million strengthening non-profit organizations.  

Thomasina earned a BA from Mount Holyoke College, and a JD from the University of Michigan Law School.  She holds certificates in Advanced Family Business Advising and Family Wealth Advising from the Family Firm Institute.  She is also a member of the Purposeful Planning Institute, where she serves on its Advisory Board; the Galliard Family Business Advisor Institute, a non-profit on whose Board she also serves; the Independent Trustee Alliance; and The Florida Bar.  Additionally, Thomasina serves on the Advisory Board of Enterprising Women magazine.
