This week’s guests:

Karen McNeill

Senior Family Historian, Family Office Services Ascent Private Capital Management*

As an award-winning historian and biographer, Karen helps clients explore their family’s journey through generations. “I’m passionate about history and its importance in helping us understand ourselves and the world in which we live. I believe we’re not just products of history: we’re historical actors in a larger narrative, and this awareness can inform how we live our lives and build toward the future.”

Karen helps families and their businesses discover the people and stories that embody the values and culture that define their legacy and shape their vision of the future. She works with multiple generations within families and key figures in businesses to uncover and construct meaningful histories.

“I believe strongly in the responsibility of everybody to consider the short- and long-term impact of their actions and decisions, and I’ve spent a long time researching and writing about how people address contemporary issues while consciously trying to shape the future.”

Karen has nearly twenty years of experience developing history projects with individuals, families, businesses, private and public sector organizations. She has been a consultant to heritage foundations, landmarks commissions and many private and public individuals, and has taught, published and earned numerous honors and awards for her work. She is also a seasoned public speaker and facilitator. At Ascent, Karen is particularly engaged in Philanthropic Impact and Women and Wealth initiatives.

She earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. in history from the University of California, Berkeley.

Emily Bouchard

Managing Director, Leadership and Legacy Consultant, Family Office Services Ascent Private Capital Management*

A specialist in family dynamics, Emily focuses on the emotional impact of wealth on estate and financial planning. Backed by her extensive experience, she fosters better communication and leadership skills to help multigenerational families successfully transition their businesses, assets and values.

Her approach stems from an acute awareness of the importance of healthy communication in families. Her mother’s death when Emily was 14 showed her the impact on people’s lives when they are not equipped to communicate about things that matter most. “Since that time,” she says, “I’ve had an insatiable curiosity about how I can best support people in connecting with those they love about their hopes, dreams and concerns.” She encourages families to share their philanthropic vision as well. “Facilitating multigenerational families in clarifying their philanthropic goals and vision is a great way to open up conversations about values, history, legacy and how to have a real impact.”

Emily earned her B.A. in child development from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and M.S. in social work, with an emphasis on marital and family therapy, from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is also a certified money coach and has facilitated hundreds of family meetings in the U.S. and internationally. Emily is a frequent presenter at conferences and trains advisors on family dynamics, family education, and the complexities of family business transitions.

Emily is the coauthor of “Estate Planning for the Blended Family,” “Beginner’s Guide to Purposeful Prenups” and other publications. She was the founder of blended-families.com, which provides resources and strategies to help stepfamilies overcome their challenges. She has appeared on CNN and The Today Show, has been published in The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, as well as in other media.
